Technical Brief: FDA Food Contact Compliance in PE Packaging—A Polymer Integrity Report

By Guanjie (Jason) Wang | Technical Solutions Lead at Flexon Pack

In the global food and pharmaceutical supply chain, packaging is not a container; it is a compliance shield. For procurement leads in the US and EU, "Food Grade" is no longer a marketing claim—it is a data-driven requirement involving molecular migration limits and resin traceability.

At Flexon Pack, we define food safety through the lens of Polymer Integrity. This report details the technical alignment of our production with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 standards.

1. Resin Transparency: The ExxonMobil and Lotrene Data

Solutions for food contact begin with upstream control. Flexon Pack exclusively utilizes 100% virgin resins from globally recognized polymer leaders to eliminate the risk of cross-contamination inherent in recycled streams.

  • ExxonMobil™ LLDPE/LDPE Series: Our primary feedstock for high-clarity food bags. These resins are certified under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 (c) 3.1a & 3.2a, ensuring suitability for food contact during processing and storage.
  • Lotrene® (QAPCO) PE Grades: Utilized for high-strength industrial food liners. These polymers meet stringent migration testing, providing the thermal stability required for hot-fill or high-speed automated packaging lines.

2. The ±5% Precision Protocol as a Safety Measure

Traditional blown film processes often allow thickness variations of ±15% to ±20%. For food-grade liners, a "thin spot" is a failure point where oxygen or moisture ingress can compromise the organic integrity of the contents.

Our ±5% Precision Protocol, driven by Automatic Thickness Control (ATC) systems, ensures that every square inch of the barrier provides the calculated protection. This precision is what we call Asset Protection™—reducing the risk of batch spoilage by maintaining a consistent molecular barrier.

3. PFAS-Free and PFAS-Intentional Bans

With the enforcement of SB 54 and various US state bans (CA, NY, MN), the presence of "forever chemicals" is a critical liability for food brands. By utilizing 100% virgin polymers and documented processing aids, we provide a PFAS-Free Guarantee, ensuring that no intentional PFAS compounds are introduced during the extrusion process.

Conclusion: Data Over Claims

A solution is only as strong as its weakest molecule. For the 2026 compliance cycle, technical leads must demand more than a certificate of analysis (COA); they must demand a partner who understands the physics of the polymer.
