Custom PE Flat Bags: Materials, Seals & Manufacturing Options
Flexon Pack manufactures custom open-top PE flat bags for retail products, apparel, hardware, industrial components, food-contact projects, liners and general product protection. Unlike zipper or ziplock bags, a flat bag has no integrated reclosable closure. It may be supplied open, heat sealed after filling, tied or closed by a separate method.
Standard flat bags are available in virgin LDPE for flexibility and clarity or HDPE where greater stiffness is preferred. Recycled-content PE, anti-static PE and other formulations are separate options. Performance depends on film thickness, bag dimensions, side or bottom seals, packed contents and closing method.
Custom manufacturing options include widths from 30 to 750 mm, film thicknesses from 30 to 150 microns, open-top or heat-sealable constructions, and gravure printing / up to 8 colors. Larger or heavier-duty specifications require separate production review.

Film extrusion and bag converting may be inspected for finished dimensions, thickness distribution, appearance, seal construction and packing condition. Available nominal thicknesses generally range from 30 to 150 microns, subject to the selected material, dimensions and finished bag construction. Permitted thickness limits, measurement locations, sampling plans and acceptance criteria are confirmed in the approved order specification.

Custom Sizes, Bag Constructions and Printing
Buyers can specify custom widths generally ranging from 30 to 750 mm, subject to the material, thickness and construction. Available formats may include open-top bags, bottom-seal or side-seal constructions, gussets, perforations, vent holes, warning text and branded artwork. Gravure printing of up to eight colors may be available when technically suitable for the approved film, artwork, coverage and order quantity.

Evidence Matched to the Finished Product
Supporting documents are reviewed according to their legal holder, material, tested sample, method, reporting limits, intended use and destination market. Depending on the specification and available evidence, a project file may include resin or component declarations, food-contact documents, PFAS-related declarations or testing, REACH or RoHS evidence and order-specific inspection records. A document for one resin, sample or bag construction should not be applied automatically to another finished product.

Samples and Order-Specific Production Planning
Existing samples or custom prototypes may be available before mass production, depending on the requested construction. Indicative production timing may be approximately 7–10 days for eligible plain products and 15–20 days for some custom orders after the required specification, artwork and sample approvals. Final sample availability, MOQ, production lead time and shipment schedule are confirmed in the written quotation for the individual product and order.

A flat bag is a simple PE enclosure without an integrated zipper. It can be supplied open for fast filling or closed after packing by heat sealing, tying, taping or another application-specific method.
Side-seal and bottom-seal performance depends on film thickness, bag dimensions, packed-product weight, sharp edges and handling. Standard flat bags are not automatically leak-proof, sterile, vacuum-rated or suitable for hazardous materials.

When to Use — and Not Use — Standard Flat Bags
Press-to-close PE flat bags are designed for organization, repeated access and general product protection. They are not a universal replacement for sterile, liquid-proof, high-barrier or regulated dangerous-goods packaging.

Sterile or Validated Medical Barrier Packaging
A standard flat bag is not a sterile barrier and should not be used as primary sterile medical packaging without dedicated validation.

Press-to-close seals should not be assumed to be leak-proof. Liquid applications require a tested seal structure and defined acceptance criteria.

Vacuum, Retort or High-Temperature Processing
Standard LDPE flat bags are not designed for retort, boiling, oven use, hot filling or vacuum-processing conditions unless separately engineered.

Electrostatic Shielding
An anti-static PE bag is not the same as a static-shielding bag. Sensitive electronics may require metallized or multilayer shielding packaging with verified performance.

What materials are available for custom PE flat bags?
Standard Flexon flat bags are available in virgin LDPE, selected for flexibility, clarity and low-odor packaging. The exact resin grade is selected according to the packed product and destination market.
Recycled-content PE, anti-static PE and compostable formulations are separate material programs. Their performance, disposal requirements and supporting documents must be evaluated independently.
What thickness should I choose for a PE flat bag?
Thickness depends on bag dimensions, packed-product weight, sharp edges, puncture risk and handling conditions. General selection ranges include:
- 30–50 microns for lightweight products
- 50–80 microns for standard retail and general storage
- 80–120 microns for hardware and industrial components
- Up to 150 microns for engineered heavy-duty requirements
Final thickness should be confirmed through specification review and sample evaluation.
How are flat bags closed after filling?
A single-track seal uses one interlocking seal construction and is suitable for general storage, retail packaging and lightweight products.
A double-track seal uses two interlocking profiles, providing greater closure redundancy for repeated opening and closing. The correct option depends on bag size, packed contents, opening force and target cost.
Can Flexon flat bags be used for food-contact projects?
Food-contact options are available when the selected resin, additives, colorants and printing system are suitable for the intended food and conditions of use.
Buyers may request the applicable SGS analytical report against FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. Report coverage must be checked against the exact material and finished specification.
Standard flat bags should not automatically be described as hermetic, leak-proof or sterile unless the finished construction has been separately tested.

Mass-production MOQ depends on dimensions, thickness, material, seal construction, printing colors and packing requirements. A single prototype is not the MOQ for mass production.
What is the production lead time, and what is required for a quote?
Eligible plain products typically require 7–10 days. Custom production normally requires 15–20 days after material, dimensions, artwork, samples and order details are approved. Shipping time is quoted separately.
