LDPE Liner Thickness, Testing and Food-Contact Evidence

LDPE liners used with powders, ingredients or industrial materials should be specified according to the packed product, filling process, load, closure method, storage conditions and destination-market requirements. Average film thickness alone does not establish liner performance or food-contact suitability.

A defensible buyer review connects the approved material structure, thickness distribution, seals, functional testing and supporting documents to the exact liner being ordered.

Define thickness before comparing quotations

The specification should state whether the quoted thickness refers to one film layer or the combined thickness of two layers. It should also define:

  • nominal thickness;
  • permitted upper and lower limits;
  • measurement instrument and resolution;
  • measurement locations across the liner;
  • number of liners and readings sampled;
  • whether acceptance is based on individual, minimum, maximum or average results;
  • lot definition and acceptance procedure.

There is no single universal thickness tolerance for every LDPE liner. Film width, nominal gauge, resin formulation, co-extruded structure, printing and manufacturing conditions can affect what is technically achievable. Any tolerance must be confirmed in the approved quotation or product specification.

Evaluate thickness distribution, not one reading

Local thin areas may affect puncture, tear or seal performance, but a single micrometer reading cannot characterize an entire liner or production lot. Measurements should be taken at agreed representative locations and away from folds, seals or embossed areas unless those features are specifically being evaluated.

Buyers should record the individual readings and compare them with the agreed acceptance rule. A theoretical bag-weight calculation may support a reasonableness check, but it does not replace physical thickness measurements.

Specify single-layer or co-extruded structures by function

Single-layer and co-extruded PE films can both be suitable when properly designed and validated. A multilayer structure should not be assumed to provide superior puncture resistance, moisture protection or food-contact status without evidence for the actual construction.

For a co-extruded liner, the specification may identify:

  • number of layers and total nominal thickness;
  • polymer or approved formulation for each functional layer;
  • permitted recycled content, additives, colorants and processing aids;
  • which surface will contact the packed product;
  • change-control requirements for resin grades or layer ratios;
  • finished-film and liner performance criteria.

Layer descriptions such as “strength layer” or “barrier layer” should be supported by the properties required from the finished liner. They should not be treated as proof of performance by themselves.

Match performance testing to the packed product

Suitable checks depend on the application. They may include:

  • finished dimensions and thickness distribution;
  • seal continuity and seal-strength testing;
  • tensile, elongation, tear or puncture testing;
  • leak or filled-liner testing;
  • drop, compression or handling trials;
  • closure, tie or heat-sealing validation;
  • a filling trial using production-representative material.

The method, sample conditioning, orientation, test speed, packed load and acceptance limits should be agreed before production. A passing resin data sheet or unfilled-film test does not guarantee the performance of a filled and sealed liner.

Food-contact evidence requires a defined scope

Virgin PE does not automatically make a finished liner suitable for food contact, and recycled-content PE is not automatically unsuitable in every jurisdiction or application. The review may need to consider the complete formulation, including additives, colorants, processing aids, printing and closure components.

For a food-contact application, buyers should identify:

  • destination market and applicable legal framework;
  • food type or ingredient;
  • direct or indirect contact;
  • contact duration and temperature;
  • whether the liner will be used once or repeatedly;
  • the material or finished construction covered by each declaration or test report.

A reference to a polyethylene regulation or resin statement is not a universal finished-product certificate. Check the named manufacturer or applicant, tested sample, conditions of use, date, report scope and connection to the ordered liner.

Review PFAS evidence separately

“PFAS-free” should not be used as an unlimited claim. Buyers should distinguish among:

  • a declaration that specified PFAS substances are not intentionally added;
  • a component-supplier declaration;
  • a laboratory report for a defined representative sample;
  • testing connected to a specific production order.

If analytical testing is required, agree on the target substances, method, reporting limits, laboratory, sample identity and relationship between the tested construction and the production liner. One report should not be generalized to every material, site, product or future batch.

LDPE liner buyer checklist

  • Is the packed product and expected fill weight defined?
  • Are finished dimensions and usable internal dimensions clear?
  • Is thickness defined per layer with an agreed sampling method?
  • Are the material structure and permitted formulation changes documented?
  • Are seal, puncture, leak or filled-liner requirements measurable?
  • Does the food-contact evidence match the intended market and use conditions?
  • Is each PFAS declaration or report limited to its actual scope?
  • Are production-lot identification and inspection records required?
