PE Film Performance Engineering
Film
Performance Control
PE film performance is controlled through resin selection, blend, gauge, layer structure, winding tension, cling, slip and core format. The correct specification must match the buyer's machine and load.
Define the target application, equipment, load profile and test method before comparing stretch ratio, puncture resistance or load retention between films.
Custom PE Film Types and Recommended Uses
Compare machine stretch film, power pre-stretch film, functional PE film and continuous tubing or sheeting. Each format can be specified by resin, gauge, width, core, winding, additives and printing.
Power Pre-Stretch Film
Pre-Stretched Film // Controlled Application Force Roll Configuration by Wrapping Equipment Best for: consistent pallet wrapping where reduced application force and defined load containment are required.
Functional PE Film
Anti-Static / UV-Stabilized / Colored Options Additive Performance Defined by Application Best for: projects requiring specified color, UV stabilization, slip, cling or controlled static dissipation.
PE Tubing and Continuous Film
Continuous Tube / Sheet // Custom Roll Format For Automated Converting and Custom Bag Making Best for: in-house bag making, protective sleeves, automated converting and custom-length packaging.Select film by equipment, load or converting process, required gauge, roll configuration and performance target. Trial rolls are recommended when machine compatibility or load stability is critical.
Compliance Evidence
Available Documents for Custom PE Film Projects
Flexon organizes available material test reports and management-system documents according to the selected resin, additives, printing system, intended application and destination market. During order review, the applicable documents are matched to the proposed film specification.

Application Guidance
Best Uses for Custom PE Film
Custom PE film supports wrapping, bundling, surface protection, liners and downstream converting when its resin, gauge, roll configuration and performance targets are matched to the process.
Recommended Applications
Suitable when the material, thickness and film structure are matched to the packed product.
-
Machine and Pallet Wrapping
Machine stretch film can unitize pallet loads when the film and wrapping program are validated for the load.
-
Protective Wrapping and Bundling
LDPE or LLDPE film can protect surfaces, bundle products and reduce dust or handling exposure.
-
Automated Converting and Bag Making
Tubing, sheeting and rollstock can feed compatible converting, sealing and bag-making equipment.
-
Printed and Colored Film
Custom color, warning text, branding and identification can be added where the film and print process are compatible.
-
Functional Additive Projects
Cling, slip, anti-static or UV-stabilized options can be specified for suitable applications.
Applications Requiring a Different Film System
These uses normally require a validated construction, documented test method or specialist packaging system.
-
Sterile or Validated Barrier Packaging
Standard PE film is not a validated sterile or high-barrier package.
-
Pallet Stability Without Load Trials
Film alone cannot guarantee load stability without considering the pallet, product, corners and wrapping pattern.
-
Retort or High-Temperature Processing
Standard LDPE and LLDPE film are not intended for retort, oven, boiling or other high-temperature processes.
-
Hazardous Materials or Dangerous Goods
Regulated materials require packaging designed and tested for the applicable transport or containment standard.
-
Long-Term Outdoor Use Without UV Protection
Unstabilized PE film may degrade during extended sunlight and weather exposure.
Specification note: provide the application, equipment, load details and required performance criteria when requesting a trial. Sterile, retort, dangerous-goods and long-term outdoor uses require a separate technical and document review.
Custom PE Film Buying Guide
Essential answers about PE resin, single-layer gauge, film formats, core and roll configuration, printing, MOQ, trial rolls and production lead time.
What materials are available for custom PE film?
Standard Flexon PE films are available in virgin LDPE, selected for flexibility, clarity and low-odor packaging. The exact resin grade is selected according to the packed product and destination market.
Colored, recycled-content, anti-static and UV-stabilized PE options are available for suitable projects and are quoted separately.
What film gauge should I specify?
Thickness depends on film width, load or product requirements, sharp edges, puncture risk and handling conditions. General selection ranges include:
- 30–50 microns for lightweight products
- 50–80 microns for standard retail and general storage
- 80–120 microns for hardware and industrial components
- Up to 150 microns for engineered heavy-duty requirements
For critical machine, load or puncture requirements, confirm the selected gauge through a trial roll or agreed performance test.
What information is required to specify a PE film roll?
Specify the film format, finished width, nominal gauge, core ID, roll length or net weight, winding direction, maximum roll diameter and allowable splices. Also provide the machine or converting process, line speed, packed product or pallet load, and required cling, slip, sealing, puncture or tensile performance.
Can PE film be supplied for food-contact projects?
Food-contact film options are available when the selected resin, additives, colorants and printing system suit the intended food and conditions of use. Available supporting documents can be reviewed against the exact finished specification.
What sizes, features and printing options can be customized?
- Custom roll widths, lengths, net weights and maximum diameters
- Film thicknesses from 30 to 150 microns
- Roll, sheet or tubing formats
- Transparent, colored, opaque or additive-modified film
- Write-on panels, warning text and barcode areas
- Custom cores, winding direction and export packing
- Gravure printing in up to 8 colors
The approved order specification records the resin, gauge, film format, width, core, winding direction, roll size, printing and additional features.
What is the MOQ, and can I receive samples before ordering?
Existing samples may be available for initial material, thickness and construction evaluation. Custom-size or printed prototypes can also be arranged when required.
Mass-production MOQ depends on dimensions, thickness, material, film structure, printing colors and packing requirements. MOQ is confirmed after the roll format and production specification are reviewed.
What is the production lead time, and what is required for a quote?
Production normally requires 20–30 days after the resin, film format, dimensions, artwork, trial requirements and order details are approved. The exact schedule depends on the specification, quantity and current production capacity; shipping time is quoted separately.
For an accurate quotation, provide:
- Finished width and length
- Packed product and unit weight
- Preferred thickness or a physical reference sample
- Order quantity and expected repeat volume
- Artwork, printing colors and coverage
- Destination country and intended application
- Required food-contact, PFAS, REACH or RoHS documents
- Packing method and shipping destination
