LDPE vs LLDPE vs HDPE: PE Film Selection Guide

LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE belong to the polyethylene family, but they can provide different combinations of flexibility, stiffness, clarity, sealing behaviour and mechanical performance. The correct choice depends on the resin grade, formulation, film structure, thickness, processing conditions and intended application.

No PE family is universally best for apparel, food, hardware or industrial packaging. Buyers should define the required function and validate the proposed finished construction.

What information is needed before selecting PE film?

  • packed product, dimensions, weight and shape;
  • sharp-edge, puncture, tear or drop risks;
  • required flexibility, stiffness, clarity or surface finish;
  • sealing and closure method;
  • manual or automated packing process;
  • storage and transport conditions;
  • printing, friction, blocking or static-control requirements;
  • destination-market and product-contact evidence.

A material name without a grade, formulation and finished-product specification is not enough to predict performance.

LDPE: properties to evaluate

LDPE grades are often considered where flexibility, clarity, softness or heat-sealing behaviour is important. Actual results depend on grade, additives, blend, thickness, extrusion conditions and surface treatment.

Evaluation may include:

  • film flexibility and stiffness;
  • haze, gloss and colour;
  • seal-initiation range and seal strength;
  • coefficient of friction and blocking;
  • tensile, elongation, tear or puncture performance;
  • printing and surface-treatment compatibility.

LDPE is not automatically transparent, easy to seal or appropriate for food contact. The finished formulation and evidence must be evaluated for the intended use.

LLDPE: properties to evaluate

LLDPE grades may be considered where elongation, film toughness or puncture behaviour is relevant. Performance varies with comonomer type, molecular structure, melt-flow characteristics, density, additives and processing.

LLDPE is not automatically the most puncture-resistant or suitable for every heavy-duty application. A bag can still fail because of local thin areas, unsuitable seals, sharp products, closure design or handling conditions.

Where these characteristics matter, evaluate the finished film or bag using defined test methods and representative packed-product trials.

HDPE: properties to evaluate

HDPE grades may be considered where stiffness, thin-film behaviour, opacity or a different surface feel is desired. Actual tensile, tear, puncture, chemical-resistance and sealing properties depend on the specific grade and construction.

HDPE is not automatically stronger, more chemical-resistant, less expensive or responsible for a frosted appearance. Frosted or matte effects may also arise from formulation, processing, surface texture, colour or other design choices.

Blends and multilayer structures

PE grades may be blended or used in co-extruded layers to balance selected properties. A blend is not automatically higher quality, and there is no universal LDPE/LLDPE ratio for tough packaging.

The approved specification may identify:

  • polymer families or approved grades;
  • layer structure and total thickness;
  • permitted blend or formulation range;
  • virgin or recycled-content requirements;
  • additives, colourants and functional components;
  • changes requiring written buyer approval.

Do not select material from a universal application table

Apparel bags may require clarity, softness, low odor, ventilation and print quality. Hardware bags may require puncture, abrasion, seal and loaded-bag testing. Food-contact applications require evidence matched to the complete formulation, jurisdiction and conditions of use.

These needs do not map automatically to one PE family. Compare candidate constructions using the same dimensions, thickness convention and test conditions.

Define thickness separately from resin type

The specification should state whether thickness refers to one film layer or two combined layers. Record the nominal single-layer thickness, permitted limits, measurement locations, instrument, sample quantity and acceptance rule.

A thinner LLDPE film does not automatically outperform a thicker LDPE or HDPE film, and a heavier film is not automatically stronger. Use physical measurements and application-relevant performance tests.

Compare materials using controlled evidence

Virgin and recycled-content considerations

Virgin and recycled-content PE can both be suitable when the approved formulation meets the required function and evidence scope. Virgin PE does not automatically guarantee clarity, purity, odor, strength or compliance. Recycled-content PE is not automatically cloudy, weak or contaminated.

Where recycled content is specified, define the required percentage, calculation basis, source category, supporting records and applicable finished-product performance criteria.

Information to include in an RFQ

  • packed product, weight, shape and use conditions;
  • bag or film format and finished dimensions;
  • required flexibility, stiffness, clarity and surface behaviour;
  • nominal single-layer thickness and tolerance;
  • seal, closure, printing and packing requirements;
  • mechanical or line-trial acceptance criteria;
  • virgin or recycled-content requirements;
  • destination-market documents and testing;
  • quantity, destination and delivery term.
