A custom PE flat bag should be selected from the packed product, filling method, required protection, closing process and distribution conditions—not from size or nominal thickness alone.
This guide explains how buyers can define a measurable flat-bag specification and evaluate production-representative samples before ordering.
1. What is a PE flat bag?
A flat bag is typically produced from lay-flat PE film with an open side for filling and sealed edges according to the selected construction. The exact number and location of seals depends on whether the bag is made from tubing, folded film or another converting method.
Possible uses include industrial components, hardware, apparel, documents, kits, retail products and warehouse organization. Suitability depends on the exact product and bag specification.
2. Define the packed product and process
Before selecting material or thickness, record:
- product dimensions, weight and shape;
- sharp edges, projections, oils, powders or other relevant characteristics;
- manual, semi-automatic or automated filling;
- how the open end will be closed;
- storage duration and environment;
- carton, pallet and transport conditions;
- required visibility, printing and identification;
- destination-market and application-specific evidence.
The same product may require a different construction when it is hand packed, dropped into a carton or fed through automated equipment.
3. Compare LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE by finished performance
LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE and PE blends can provide different combinations of flexibility, stiffness, clarity, surface friction, sealing behaviour and mechanical performance. These characteristics also vary with resin grade, formulation, additives, thickness and manufacturing conditions.
LDPE-rich structures may be considered where flexibility, clarity or a softer feel is important. LLDPE may be evaluated where film toughness or elongation is relevant. HDPE-rich structures may be considered where stiffness or thin-film behaviour is desired. These are design considerations rather than guaranteed properties.
LDPE is not automatically the most durable choice, and HDPE is not automatically cheaper or more puncture-resistant. Select the proposed construction from the application and verify it using representative finished bags.
If virgin or recycled content is required, identify the permitted material program, percentage and supporting records. Neither material label independently establishes appearance, strength, odor or regulatory suitability.
4. Define thickness and its measurement method
The specification should state whether nominal thickness refers to one film layer or the combined thickness of two layers. It should also define:
- nominal single-layer thickness;
- permitted upper and lower limits;
- measurement locations;
- instrument and resolution;
- number of bags and readings;
- whether acceptance uses individual, minimum, maximum or average values;
- lot definition and acceptance rule.
There is no universal micron range for lightweight, medium-duty or heavy-duty products. A thicker bag may increase material weight, but thickness alone does not establish puncture resistance, seal strength or load capacity.
For higher-risk applications, compare candidate constructions using relevant puncture, tear, seal, drop, load or packed-product trials.
5. Specify finished and usable dimensions
Confirm how width and length are measured and whether they represent external or usable internal dimensions. Depending on the construction, record:
- finished external width and length;
- usable internal dimensions;
- opening dimension;
- lip, flap, header or wicket area;
- gusset dimensions where applicable;
- seal position and seal allowance;
- dimension tolerances.
For thick, irregular or rigid products, use a representative packing trial to confirm filling clearance. Oversizing may increase material and carton volume, while insufficient clearance can slow filling or place stress on the film and seals.
6. Define the closing and sealing method
An open flat bag may be heat sealed, taped, tied, folded, clipped or closed using another approved method. The buyer should identify who closes the bag, which equipment is used and what performance is required after closing.
Possible evaluation items include:
- seal continuity and position;
- seal-strength or peel testing;
- leak testing where relevant;
- compatibility with the buyer’s sealing equipment;
- closure performance after storage or transport;
- a packed-product handling trial.
Temperature, pressure and contact time depend on the film and equipment. Machine settings should be established through a trial rather than copied from an unrelated construction.
7. Evaluate automated packing compatibility
A flat bag intended for automated or semi-automated equipment may require additional controls, including:
- consistent opening position and usable dimensions;
- controlled coefficient of friction or blocking behaviour;
- hole, wicket or header placement;
- film stiffness and opening performance;
- static-control requirements where applicable;
- stack, bundle and carton orientation.
Run a production-representative line trial using the buyer’s actual equipment, product and operating conditions. A general statement that a bag is “automation compatible” is not sufficient.
8. Control printing and identification
Printing may include a logo, product information, barcode, QR code, warning text, handling instructions or batch-identification area. Define:
- approved artwork and revision;
- printing method, colours and coverage;
- print position and registration tolerance;
- colour reference and acceptable variation;
- ink adhesion or rub-test requirements;
- barcode content and verification method;
- restrictions applicable to the intended use.
Gravure, flexographic or other printing processes may be proposed depending on the construction, artwork and quantity. No printing method guarantees identical colour across every production run; acceptance should be based on an approved reference and agreed criteria.
9. Establish an inspection plan
Depending on the order, inspection may cover:
- approved material and formulation;
- finished dimensions and thickness distribution;
- seal appearance and performance;
- printing and artwork;
- holes, perforations, lips or other features;
- visual defects, contamination and odor criteria;
- packing quantity, labels and carton requirements;
- production-lot identification and retained samples.
Agree on the measurement method, sample quantity, inspection frequency and acceptance limits before production. General claims such as “stable quality” or “consistent performance” are not substitutes for order-specific records.
10. RFQ checklist for custom flat bags
- packed-product description, dimensions, weight and photograph;
- bag construction and opening side;
- finished and usable dimensions;
- PE material or required performance;
- virgin or recycled-content requirement;
- nominal single-layer thickness and tolerance;
- closing or sealing method;
- printing, holes, lips, warnings and other features;
- functional tests and supporting documents;
- order quantity, packing method, destination and delivery term.
