Custom printing can add identification, instructions, warnings and branding to a PE ziplock bag, but successful production requires more than placing a logo on an existing bag. The material, usable dimensions, thickness convention, zipper, artwork, printing method and inspection criteria should be defined together.
This guide explains how buyers can prepare a technically comparable RFQ and approve a production-representative printed bag.
1. Define the function of the printed bag
Identify what the printing must achieve:
- brand identification;
- product name, part number or variant;
- instructions or handling information;
- warning or destination-market text;
- barcode, QR code or traceability field;
- retail presentation or warehouse identification.
Required content should be legible at the final printed size. QR codes and barcodes should be verified using the intended data, contrast and scanning conditions rather than approved only by appearance.
2. Specify the PE bag before selecting printing
The unprinted bag requirements remain part of the printed product specification. Confirm:
- packed product, dimensions, weight and use conditions;
- finished and usable internal bag dimensions;
- LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE or approved PE blend;
- virgin or recycled-content requirement;
- nominal single-layer thickness and permitted tolerance;
- zipper profile, lip, gusset, holes and seals;
- packing quantity, cartons, labels and destination.
LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE can provide different combinations of flexibility, stiffness, clarity, surface behaviour and printing response. Properties vary by grade, formulation, thickness and manufacturing conditions. No PE family is automatically the strongest, clearest or most suitable for printing.
3. Select thickness from the application
There is no universal micron range for lightweight, industrial or heavy-duty printed ziplock bags. Thickness alone does not establish puncture resistance, durability, zipper performance or protection.
The thickness specification should define:
- whether the value applies to one layer or two combined layers;
- nominal single-layer thickness;
- permitted upper and lower limits;
- measurement locations and instrument;
- sample quantity and acceptance rule.
For demanding applications, compare candidate constructions using suitable zipper, seal, puncture, drop, load or packed-product trials.
4. Prepare controlled artwork
The artwork package should include:
- editable vector files where available;
- final text and language versions;
- bag outline, zipper position, seals and print-safe area;
- spot-colour references or process-colour requirements;
- barcode or QR code data;
- orientation and front/back identification;
- artwork revision and approval date.
File formats, colour mode, resolution, bleed and trapping requirements depend on the selected printing process and artwork. Ask the printer for the applicable prepress specification rather than relying on one universal file rule.
5. Select the printing process for the project
Flexographic, gravure or another suitable printing method may be proposed depending on the film, artwork, number of colours, coverage, registration requirements, order quantity and repeat-order plan.
The quotation should state:
- printing method;
- spot or process colours;
- one-side or two-side printing;
- print coverage and orientation;
- plate, cylinder, proofing or setup charges;
- registration and colour acceptance criteria;
- tooling ownership, storage and repeat-order conditions.
Gravure does not automatically guarantee identical colour across every production run, and a single-colour design does not automatically produce the lowest total cost. Final results depend on the artwork, substrate, ink, equipment and agreed controls.
6. Control colour and print position
Screen colours and printed colours may differ. Where colour matters, use an agreed physical or standardized colour reference and define acceptable variation.
Print-position requirements should account for bag-making variation, seals, zipper profiles, holes, lips, gussets and film movement. Record the permitted registration tolerance in the approved specification.
A digital artwork proof confirms layout and content but does not reproduce every characteristic of ink printed on the final PE film. A production proof or representative printed sample may be required for critical projects.
7. Evaluate ink adhesion and finished-bag interaction
Ink performance can be affected by the film formulation, surface treatment, storage, rubbing, folding, blocking and contact with the packed product. Depending on the application, evaluation may include:
- ink adhesion using an agreed tape or other method;
- rub, scratch or scuff resistance;
- set-off or blocking after stacking;
- smearing or transfer under expected conditions;
- legibility after filling, folding and transport;
- interaction with adhesive strips or closure areas.
The method, conditioning and acceptance limit should be agreed before production. “High-quality printing” and “stable colour” are not measurable inspection criteria.
8. Keep printing clear of functional areas
Artwork should account for the zipper, side seals, bottom seal, vent holes, hang holes and any adhesive or write-on area. Heavy print coverage in a functional area may affect sealing, closure use, friction or visual inspection.
If printing extends into a seal or food-contact area, review the complete construction and applicable evidence before approval.
9. Approve a representative printed sample
Sample approval may cover:
- correct bag and artwork revision;
- finished and usable dimensions;
- film thickness and material;
- zipper and seal performance;
- print location, orientation and registration;
- colour reference and appearance;
- ink adhesion and barcode readability;
- packing configuration and labels.
A digital mock-up or stock sample does not prove mass-production performance. Important accepted characteristics should be transferred into the written product and inspection specification.
10. Review documents by actual scope
Depending on the application, buyers may request material declarations, ink or component records, inspection reports or appropriately scoped third-party laboratory reports.
Check the applicant or manufacturer, tested material or sample, method, date, report scope and applicability to the printed construction. A report covering unprinted PE resin does not automatically cover inks, additives, zipper components or the finished bag.

- editable artwork and revision;
- printing sides, colours, coverage and colour references;

- required samples, testing and supporting documents;
- quantity per artwork, packing method and delivery term.
