A Practical Guide to Choosing Custom PE Zipper Bags

The right zipper bag depends on the product, required protection, packing process, presentation and destination-market requirements. Before requesting a quotation, define how the bag will be filled, handled, stored, transported and opened.

This short guide covers the main choices for custom PE zipper bags. Technical performance and compliance should be confirmed through an approved specification, representative samples and applicable supporting evidence.

1. What will the bag contain?

Start with the packed product because it determines most of the bag specification.

2. How will the bag be used?

• Will it be opened and closed repeatedly?
• Will it be filled manually or by automated equipment?
• Will it hang on display or remain inside an export carton?
• Will it be compressed, dropped or exposed to sharp edges?
• Are clarity, a frosted finish or printed branding important?
• Are ventilation holes, warnings, labels or barcodes required?
• What storage and transport conditions are expected?

Terms such as “heavy duty,” “premium” and “moisture proof” are not measurable specifications. Describe the actual application and define the characteristics that matter.

3. Select the PE material and finish

Flexon Pack supplies custom zipper bags using order-specific PE materials and formulations. LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE and suitable blends can provide different combinations of flexibility, stiffness, clarity, surface feel, sealing behaviour and mechanical performance.

No PE family is automatically best for every product. Final selection should be based on the approved construction and application testing.

Available visual options may include clear, coloured or frosted appearances. The result depends on the formulation, thickness, processing and surface requirements, so approve a production-representative sample rather than relying only on a material name.

If virgin or recycled content is specified, record the required material program and supporting documents in the order specification. Neither material label independently establishes finished-bag performance or regulatory suitability.

4. Choose dimensions and usable space

Provide the packed product dimensions rather than only an old bag size. Confirm:

• finished external width and length;
• usable internal dimensions below the zipper;
• lip or header dimensions;
• gusset, hang hole or ventilation-hole requirements;
• required filling clearance;
• dimension tolerances and measurement method.

A sample packing trial is useful when the product is thick, irregular, rigid or difficult to insert.

5. Specify thickness by performance

A thicker film may increase material weight and change stiffness, but it does not automatically guarantee puncture resistance, longer service life or better zipper performance. Resin grade, film structure, thickness distribution, seals and packed-product conditions also matter.

The specification should state whether thickness refers to one film layer or the combined thickness of two layers. It should also record the nominal value, permitted tolerance, measurement locations and sampling method.

For higher-risk applications, evaluate production-representative bags using suitable seal, puncture, drop, load or packing trials rather than selecting thickness from a generic application chart.

6. Define the zipper and closure requirements

Confirm how frequently the bag will be opened, whether gloves will be worn and whether the bag must be easy to open on a packing line. Depending on the design, evaluation may include:

• zipper alignment and engagement;
• opening and closing force;
• closure retention after repeated use;
• end-stop or seal condition;
• leak or packed-product performance where applicable.

A press-to-close zipper is not automatically airtight or hermetic. If leakage control is critical, define the test method and acceptance limit for the finished package.

7. Select printing and customization

Possible project-specific options include:

• logo and product-information printing;
• barcodes or QR codes;
• warning text and recycling information;
• write-on panels;
• hang holes or Euro slots;
• ventilation or perforation;
• coloured film or zipper components;
• individual bundling, cartons and labels.

Printing method, number of colours, coverage, registration tolerance and ink requirements depend on the artwork, bag construction, dimensions and order quantity. Approve the artwork version and colour reference before production.

8. Confirm evidence required for the application

Supporting documents should be selected according to the exact product, intended use and destination market. Depending on the project, buyers may request material declarations, production records, inspection reports or appropriately scoped third-party laboratory reports.

Check the named applicant or manufacturer, material or tested sample, test method, date, scope and relationship to the ordered construction. A generic report or laboratory logo does not establish suitability for every zipper bag.

• bag style and required usable internal dimensions;
• preferred PE material or required performance;
• nominal single-layer thickness and tolerance, if known;
• zipper, lip, holes, printing and artwork requirements;
• packing method and quantity per carton;
• order quantity and forecast demand;
• destination and required delivery term;
• required inspection criteria and supporting documents.
