Industrial Zip Bag Thickness Guide

Choosing an appropriate film thickness is an important part of specifying an industrial press-to-close zip bag. Thickness can affect material usage, flexibility, puncture resistance, packing quantity and cost, but it cannot determine bag performance by itself.

The final construction should be selected according to the packed product, bag dimensions, PE formulation, zipper profile, seal design and handling conditions. The ranges in this guide are starting points for supplier discussions, not universal engineering specifications.


1. What Does Zip Bag Thickness Mean?

PE film thickness is commonly expressed in micrometres, also called microns, or in mils:

  • 1 mil = 25.4 microns
  • 50 microns ≈ 2 mil
  • 100 microns ≈ 4 mil

Buyers should confirm whether a quotation states the thickness of one film layer or the combined thickness of both sides of the bag. For most custom PE bag specifications, thickness should be stated as the nominal thickness of a single film layer unless the parties agree otherwise.

The approved specification should also define:

  • Nominal film thickness
  • Permitted tolerance
  • Measurement equipment and conditioning method
  • Number and location of measurement points
  • Whether seals, embossed areas and zipper profiles are excluded

2. Why Thickness Matters

A thicker film generally contains more material, but thicker does not automatically mean that a bag will be suitable for every demanding application.

4. When 30–50 Microns May Be Considered

  • Soft or rounded retail items
  • Short-term sorting and presentation

Before approval, check whether repeated zipper use, a large bag format or concentrated loads will create excessive stress. A lightweight item can still require a stronger construction if it has sharp edges or the bag is unusually large.


5. When 50–80 Microns May Be Considered

This range is often evaluated for general industrial and warehouse applications, including:

  • Assembly components
  • Small hardware with controlled edges
  • Maintenance parts
  • Barcode or write-on identification bags
  • Products requiring moderate repeated access

Selection within this range should be based on a packed-product trial. Confirm whether the bag will be dropped, compressed, dragged across work surfaces or exposed to temperature changes.


6. When 80–120 Microns May Be Considered

Heavier constructions may be appropriate for applications involving:

  • Metal components
  • Automotive or mechanical parts
  • Tools and heavier hardware
  • Repeated industrial handling
  • Higher abrasion or puncture exposure

Thickness alone may not protect against sharp threads, machined corners or pointed components. Consider protective caps, internal wrapping, reinforced structures or a different packaging material where necessary.


7. When Thickness Above 120 Microns May Be Considered

Film above 120 microns may be reviewed for specialized heavy-duty applications, but it should not automatically be specified for every heavy product.

Buyers should verify:

  • Whether the zipper profile is suitable for the film construction
  • Whether the seals remain consistent at the selected gauge
  • The maximum packed weight and load distribution
  • Bag flexibility at the intended storage temperature
  • Carton weight and the number of bags per shipment
  • Whether another packaging format would provide better protection

8. Thickness Selection by Application

Electronics and Electrical Components

Do not select an electronics bag by thickness alone. Ordinary PE provides physical protection but does not automatically provide antistatic, static-dissipative or shielding performance.

Define the required electrical property, test method, environmental conditions and applicable shelf life. Sensitive electronic components may require a specialized ESD structure rather than a standard PE zip bag.

Hardware and Fasteners

Evaluate the weight per bag, edge geometry, thread exposure, drop height and number of handling cycles. A representative packed sample should be used for puncture, seal and closure testing.

Retail and Presentation Packaging

Balance thickness with clarity, flexibility, print appearance, opening feel and material use. Premium appearance cannot be inferred from thickness alone.

Warehouse and Parts Organization

Consider repeated access, barcode readability, write-on panels, hanging holes and the possibility of oil or surface contamination from packed components.

Food-Contact Applications

Thickness does not establish food-contact suitability. Supporting evidence must match the selected resin, additives, colourants, zipper components, printing system and intended conditions of use.


9. Thickness Is Only One Part of the Specification

Two bags with the same nominal thickness may perform differently because of their material formulation, dimensions and manufacturing controls.

Material Formulation

Virgin and recycled-content PE can both be technically appropriate, depending on the intended use and applicable requirements. Buyers should define the required resin type, recycled-content percentage, clarity, mechanical performance and supporting documentation rather than assuming that one material category is universally superior.

Thickness Distribution

An average reading alone may not reveal thin areas across the film. The specification should define multiple measurement locations and an agreed tolerance where thickness consistency is important.

Seal and Zipper Performance

Seal temperature, dwell time, film formulation, contamination and zipper alignment can affect finished-bag performance. These characteristics should be inspected separately from film thickness.

Bag Dimensions

A large bag may experience greater leverage and load concentration than a small bag made from the same film. Width, length, gusset and usable internal dimensions must be considered when choosing a gauge.


10. How to Select a Thickness for Your Project

Provide the supplier with enough information to recommend and test a production-representative construction.

Packed Product

  • Product dimensions and unit weight
  • Quantity packed in each bag
  • Sharp edges, threads or protrusions
  • Surface sensitivity or contamination concerns

Handling Conditions

  • Number of expected opening and closing cycles
  • Manual or automated packing process
  • Drop, vibration and carton-compression exposure
  • Storage temperature and duration
  • Indoor, outdoor or controlled-environment use

Bag Construction

  • Finished width and length
  • Nominal single-layer thickness and tolerance
  • Single-track, double-track or other closure
