Shipping efficiency for custom PE bags depends on more than the bag price. Carton dimensions, pack count, pallet configuration, weight limits and container constraints can all affect the quantity shipped and the resulting landed cost.
There is no universal percentage saving. The result must be calculated for the specific bag, packing method, route and mode of transport.
Start with the finished bag and packing method
Carton planning should begin after the key product specifications are understood. Relevant inputs include:
- bag width, length, thickness and material structure;
- closure, printing and other features that affect folding;
- quantity per inner pack and per export carton;
- acceptable folding and compression method;
- carton strength and maximum gross weight;
- handling, warehouse and customer unpacking requirements.
Increasing the quantity per carton may reduce the number of cartons, but it can also increase carton weight, deformation risk or handling difficulty. The best configuration is therefore an application-specific balance rather than the smallest possible carton.
Use external carton dimensions in the loading calculation
Container planning should use the finished carton’s external length, width and height. Internal carton dimensions do not represent the space occupied during transport.
A basic carton-volume calculation is:
Carton volume = external length × external width × external height
A preliminary volume ratio can then be calculated as:
Nominal volume ratio = total external carton volume ÷ stated container internal volume
This ratio is only an initial estimate. Actual loading may be lower because cartons must fit in whole numbers and because space may be needed for pallets, bracing, doors, airflow, inspection or safe unloading.
Check both volume and weight constraints
A shipment may reach a weight limit before it fills the available cubic space. The review should therefore compare:
- carton count based on the proposed loading pattern;
- gross weight per carton;
- total cargo gross weight;
- container payload and transport limits provided for the shipment;
- any pallet, dunnage or bracing weight.
Container specifications and permitted transport weights can vary by equipment, carrier, route and jurisdiction. Confirm the applicable limits with the freight forwarder or carrier rather than relying on a generic container figure.
Account for pallets and operational requirements
Palletized and floor-loaded shipments require different calculations. Pallet dimensions, stacking height, carton overhang, pallet entry direction and load stability affect the usable pattern. Floor loading may use space differently but can change labour, unloading and warehouse requirements.
Carton optimization should also preserve product protection. Reducing empty space is not beneficial if it causes crushed cartons, damaged bags, unstable stacks or difficult handling.
Compare configurations with an order-specific loading plan
A useful comparison records the same inputs for each proposed configuration:
| Input | Configuration A | Configuration B |
|---|---|---|
| Bags per carton | Enter quantity | Enter quantity |
| External carton dimensions | Enter L × W × H | Enter L × W × H |
| Gross weight per carton | Enter weight | Enter weight |
| Estimated cartons per load | Based on loading pattern | Based on loading pattern |
| Estimated bags per load | Calculate | Calculate |
| Handling or protection constraints | Record constraints | Record constraints |
Any claimed improvement should be based on this documented comparison. It should state the baseline configuration, revised configuration, assumptions and exclusions. Freight savings should not be presented as guaranteed because rates and shipment conditions can change.
Information to provide for a packaging review
To evaluate a proposed packing configuration, provide the bag specification, order quantity, preferred pack count, carton-weight limit, pallet requirements, destination and planned transport mode. Flexon Pack can review manufacturability and proposed carton options, while the freight forwarder or carrier should confirm equipment availability, payload and route-specific transport requirements.
