How to Compare Recycled and Virgin PE Bags

Packaging teams are often asked to reduce material use, introduce recycled content and support corporate sustainability reporting while maintaining product protection and packing-line performance.

These objectives should not be evaluated using a material label or resin price alone. Virgin and recycled PE bags must be compared according to the same function, quality level and service conditions.

A lower carbon figure per kilogram of resin does not automatically establish that one finished bag has a lower lifecycle impact. The comparison should also consider bag weight, production yield, transport, product loss, reuse where applicable and end-of-life assumptions.

1. Compare the Same Packaging Function

The GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Standard recommends defining a functional unit that describes the service, duration and expected quality delivered by the product.

For a PE apparel bag, a functional unit might be defined as:

One bag that packs and protects a specified garment through an agreed packing, storage and delivery cycle while meeting defined strength, appearance, odor, printing and closure requirements.

Comparing one kilogram of virgin resin with one kilogram of recycled resin may not answer this question if the finished bags use different weights or deliver different performance.

2. Do Not Apply a Universal Carbon Percentage

Carbon-footprint results can vary according to feedstock, recycling process, electricity mix, transport distance, allocation method and system boundary. Therefore, a statement such as “recycled PE has a 70% lower carbon footprint” should only be used when it is linked to a named dataset, geography, calculation method and product scope.

Buyers should request the source and assumptions behind any carbon figure and avoid transferring a resin-level result directly to every finished bag.

3. Evaluate Down-Gauging With Finished-Bag Tests

Down-gauging means reducing film thickness while maintaining the required packaging function. It can reduce material use, but the achievable reduction depends on resin properties, formulation, film structure, dimensions, sealing and production controls.

Virgin PE should not automatically be described as outperforming recycled PE at half the thickness. Likewise, recycled PE should not be assumed to require a particular increase in thickness without comparative test results.

A down-gauging trial should compare:

  • Actual finished-bag weight
  • Thickness distribution and tolerance
  • Tensile, tear or puncture performance where relevant
  • Seal and closure performance
  • Printing and appearance
  • Loaded-bag and packing-line trials

4. Understand What GRS Verification Covers

The Global Recycled Standard verifies and tracks recycled materials through a chain-of-custody system and includes requirements relating to processing, environmental practices, social practices and chemical restrictions.

GRS certification does not, by itself, prove that a bag meets a buyer’s tensile, puncture, odor, printing or packing-line requirements. Those characteristics still require a product specification and appropriate inspection or testing.

Before approving a GRS-related claim, buyers should confirm the certified organization, scope certificate, transaction documentation and permitted product claim.

5. Include Product-Loss Risk Without Inventing a Failure Rate

Packaging failure can increase waste if it damages or contaminates the packed product. This factor may be important for high-value or sensitive goods, but it should be measured rather than assumed.

Buyers can compare pilot lots using:

  • Packing rejection rate
  • Seal or closure failure rate
  • Odor and visual acceptance results
  • Damage observed after a representative transport trial
  • Packaging weight per accepted packed product

Without this information, claims about cargo losses or avoided damage should be treated as hypothetical rather than proven savings.

6. Calculate Material Use per Accepted Bag

Compare finished bags using actual production data rather than nominal thickness alone.

A defensible sustainability comparison measures the amount of packaging required to deliver the same function. It does not assume that every recycled bag must be thicker or that every virgin bag can be down-gauged safely.

Compare representative designs using bag weight, verified recycled content, production yield, required performance, product-loss risk and lifecycle data with clearly stated boundaries.
