How to Specify a Custom Self-Adhesive PE Bag

A self-adhesive PE bag should be specified as a complete construction. Film thickness is important, but performance also depends on the PE formulation, bag dimensions, flap, adhesive system, release liner, surface treatment, packed product and storage conditions.

Buyers should approve production-representative samples and define measurable acceptance criteria rather than select a bag from a universal thickness chart.

1. Define the packed product and closing cycle

Start by recording:

  • product dimensions, weight and shape;
  • sharp edges or surfaces that may contact the film;
  • manual or automated filling method;
  • whether the closure is permanent or resealable;
  • expected number of opening and closing cycles;
  • storage duration, temperature and humidity;
  • printing, ventilation, warning and presentation requirements;
  • destination and application-specific evidence.

A bag used once for apparel presentation has different requirements from a bag repeatedly opened in a warehouse or exposed to dust, heat or long storage.

2. Select the PE construction by required performance

LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE and PE blends can provide different combinations of flexibility, stiffness, clarity, surface friction, sealing behaviour and mechanical performance. These properties vary with resin grade, formulation, additives, thickness and manufacturing conditions.

LDPE-rich structures may be evaluated where flexibility, clarity or a softer feel is important. LLDPE may be considered where toughness or elongation matters. HDPE-rich structures may be evaluated where stiffness or thin-film behaviour is desired. These are design considerations, not guaranteed results.

Virgin PE does not automatically provide better appearance, odor, strength or adhesive performance. Recycled-content PE is not automatically unsuitable. The approved formulation should meet the project’s performance and documentation requirements.

3. Define thickness and its measurement

The specification should state whether nominal thickness refers to one film layer or the combined thickness of two layers. It should also record:

  • nominal single-layer thickness;
  • permitted upper and lower limits;
  • measurement locations;
  • instrument and resolution;
  • number of bags and readings;
  • individual, minimum, maximum or average acceptance rules;
  • lot definition and sampling frequency.

There is no universal thickness range for apparel, electronics, hardware or industrial products. Thickness alone does not establish tear resistance, puncture resistance, load capacity, appearance or service life.

Evaluate representative bags through tests or packing trials suited to the actual product and handling conditions.

4. Specify finished dimensions, flap and usable space

Confirm:

  • finished external width and length;
  • usable internal dimensions;
  • flap length and fold position;
  • adhesive-strip position and width;
  • release-liner dimensions and overhang;
  • lip, ventilation holes and warning text;
  • dimension tolerances and measurement convention.

The flap must provide sufficient closing area without interfering with filling or the packed product. Test irregular or bulky products in an actual sample before approving dimensions.

5. Define the adhesive function

“Self-adhesive” can describe different closure systems. State whether the project requires:

  • one-time permanent closure;
  • resealable opening and closing;
  • tamper-evident behaviour;
  • easy removal without residue;
  • adhesion after defined storage or transport conditions.

The adhesive should be evaluated on the approved film surface and finished construction. Adhesive type, coating weight, film treatment, dust, printing, storage time, temperature and humidity can affect tack, peel, transfer and residue.

A closure described as resealable should be tested for the agreed number of cycles. A standard adhesive flap should not automatically be described as airtight, hermetic or tamper-evident.

6. Evaluate the release liner

The release liner protects the adhesive before use and affects packing-line handling. Possible criteria include:

  • liner position and coverage;
  • ease of removal;
  • tearing or splitting during removal;
  • static behaviour or loose-liner handling;
  • adhesive transfer to the liner;
  • compatibility with manual or automated packing.

Approve the complete adhesive-and-liner system, not only the base PE film.

7. Validate storage life cautiously

Adhesive performance may change during storage. A shelf-life statement should identify the approved adhesive system, packaging, storage temperature, humidity and evidence method.

A short accelerated-aging exposure does not automatically prove a specific real-time shelf life unless the correlation has been validated for the same materials and conditions. Where storage duration matters, define:

  • required storage period;
  • temperature and humidity range;
  • sealed-carton or other packing condition;
  • peel, tack, residue and closure acceptance criteria;
  • real-time or accelerated-aging method and limitations.

8. Control printing and surface treatment

Printing, corona treatment and other surface processes can affect appearance and adhesive interaction. Define the approved artwork, colour reference, coverage, print location, registration tolerance and ink-adhesion criteria.

Keep printing away from the adhesive contact area unless the finished construction has been evaluated for that configuration. A result from an unprinted sample should not automatically be applied to a heavily printed bag.

9. Establish a finished-bag validation plan

Depending on the application, evaluation may include:

  • finished dimensions and thickness distribution;
  • flap, adhesive and release-liner position;
  • initial tack or peel testing under an agreed method;
  • opening and closing cycle testing;
  • residue or adhesive-transfer inspection;
  • seal, puncture, tear, load or packed-product trials;
  • performance after defined conditioning or storage;
  • printing, warnings, packing quantity and lot identification.

Record the test method, conditioning, sample quantity and acceptance limits before production. A general claim of “strong adhesive” or “stable thickness” is not an inspection criterion.

10. RFQ checklist

  • packed product, dimensions, weight and photograph;
  • finished and usable bag dimensions;
  • flap and adhesive-strip position;
  • permanent, resealable or other closure requirement;
  • expected opening cycles and storage duration;
  • PE material and recycled-content requirement;
  • nominal single-layer thickness and tolerance;
  • printing, ventilation, warning and packing requirements;
  • functional tests and supporting documents;
  • order quantity, destination and delivery term.
