How to Choose a Custom Self-Adhesive PE Bag

The right self-adhesive PE bag depends on the packed product, usable dimensions, closing function, storage conditions and presentation requirements. Selecting only by nominal thickness or price can leave important details undefined.

This short guide helps buyers identify the information needed for a quotation. For detailed adhesive and storage validation, see our Self-Adhesive PE Bag Specification Guide.

1. What will the bag contain?

Record:

  • product dimensions, weight and shape;
  • sharp edges, projections or surfaces that may contact the film;
  • whether the product is apparel, a component, a document or another item;
  • manual or automated filling;
  • expected storage and transport conditions;
  • required visibility, printing, warnings and identification.

The packed product and use conditions should determine the candidate bag construction.

2. Is the adhesive permanent or resealable?

Define the required closure function:

  • Resealable: intended for an agreed number of opening and closing cycles.
  • Permanent: intended for one-time closing under defined conditions.
  • Other function: such as an application-specific closure or tamper indication that requires separate definition and validation.

“Strong adhesive” is not a complete specification. Adhesive performance can be influenced by film treatment, dust, printing, storage time, temperature, humidity and how the flap is applied.

A standard adhesive flap should not automatically be described as airtight, hermetic or tamper-evident.

3. Select the PE material by required properties

LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE and PE blends can provide different combinations of flexibility, stiffness, clarity, surface friction and mechanical behaviour. These properties vary by grade, formulation, additives, thickness and manufacturing conditions.

LDPE is not automatically clearer or more suitable for retail, and HDPE is not automatically more puncture-resistant or economical. Approve the exact proposed construction using representative finished bags.

If virgin or recycled content is required, record the material program, percentage and supporting documents. Neither label independently establishes strength, appearance, odor or regulatory suitability.

4. Define dimensions and usable space

Confirm:

  • finished external width and length;
  • usable internal dimensions;
  • flap length and fold position;
  • adhesive-strip position;
  • release-liner dimensions and overhang;
  • lip, holes or other features;
  • dimension tolerances.

Use a representative product to confirm loading clearance and flap closure, particularly for thick, irregular or rigid items.

5. Choose thickness through application testing

There is no universal micron range for retail, apparel, electronics or industrial self-adhesive bags. Thickness alone does not determine tear resistance, puncture resistance, load capacity, appearance or adhesive performance.

The specification should define nominal single-layer thickness, permitted tolerance, measurement locations, sample quantity and acceptance rule.

For higher-risk applications, compare candidate bags using suitable seal, puncture, tear, load, drop or packed-product trials.

6. Consider storage and repeated use

If the bag will be stored for an extended period or opened repeatedly, define:

  • expected storage duration;
  • temperature and humidity range;
  • number of opening and closing cycles;
  • acceptable tack, peel, residue and transfer;
  • release-liner removal behaviour;
  • conditioning or aging validation.

A short accelerated-aging test does not automatically prove a specific real-time shelf life unless the correlation has been validated for the same construction and storage conditions.

7. Decide whether printing is required

Printing may include logos, product information, instructions, warnings, barcodes or QR codes. Printing method, colours, coverage, registration and ink requirements depend on the artwork, film, quantity and intended use.

Printing can also interact with the adhesive area. Keep artwork clear of the adhesive contact zone unless the finished design has been evaluated.

For detailed artwork requirements, see the Custom Printed Self-Adhesive PE Bag Guide.

8. Confirm inspection and evidence requirements

Depending on the project, inspection may cover:

  • material and approved formulation;
  • dimensions and thickness distribution;
  • flap, adhesive and release-liner position;
  • closure performance and repeated cycles;
  • printing, warnings and code readability;
  • visual defects, odor and contamination criteria;
  • packing quantity and lot identification.

Supporting documents should match the exact material, finished construction, intended use and destination market. A generic report or company certificate does not apply automatically to every self-adhesive bag.
